Fangye Sun
Acclaimed as "beautifully expressive" and "exhibit[ing] remarkable control in her performance" (Fanfare Magazine), violinist Fangye Sun has concertized in Asia, Europe, and North America, appearing in concert venues such as Wiener Musikverein, Tonhalle Maag, Suntory Hall, Victory Symphony Hall, Benaroya Hall, and Hong Kong Cultural Center. Fangye has been featured as a concerto soloist with numerous orchestras in the U.S. and China. Furthermore, she adored collaborating with renowned musicians from many countries in chamber music and orchestral concerts at music festivals, including the Pacific Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, Pine Mountain Music Festival, Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck, and Leelanau Summer Music Festival. A seasoned guest concertmaster for Shannxi Symphony Orchestra (China) and several orchestras in the mid-Michigan region, Fangye was a tenured section violinist with the Grand Rapids Symphony from 2011-2016.
Teaching and nurturing the next generation of violinists has always been a passion for Fangye. She held professorships for over a decade at Central Michigan University and Xi'an Conservatory of Music. She likewise has enjoyed meeting and teaching new students while on faculty at the Bay View Music Festival and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and at her masterclasses overseas. Fangye has presented her pedagogical research and new music performances at the Michigan Music Conference, College Music Society National Conference, and International ClarinetFest. Her debut solo CD album, "Chinese Fantasies," featuring traditional and newly commissioned works by Chinese and American composers, was released on Blue Griffin Recording label in 2019. The digital release is available on all primary streaming services.
Fangye is a proud Spartan, holding both a doctorate and master's degree in Violin Performance from MSU under the mentorship of Walter Verdehr. Besides music, she loves cooking, gardening, spending time with her toddler daughter, and fishing alongside her husband.
