Violin

Wai Mun Chan

Singaporean violinist Joanne Chan was first exposed to the instrument at the age of 5. Born into a non musical family, she begged to learn the violin for a year before she was finally allowed to begin lessons and has never stopped since. Now based in Ann Arbor, Chan continues to pursue her childhood dreams under the tutelage of Professor Danielle Belen for her Master’s Degree at the University of Michigan. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree (with Honors) in Violin Performance from the National University of Singapore. Throughout her education, she has participated internationally in several events such as the Roundtop Festival Institute, Aspen Music Festival, Cremona Music Festival, Sounding Point Academy, and clinched the Gold Award for the Raffles Arts International Solo Violin Competition. Chan has also served in concertmaster and principal positions in various orchestras under the baton of renowned conductors, including Michelle Merrill, Robert Spano, Kenneth Kiesler and Joshua Tan.

As a firm believer in holistic artistic experience and the importance of physical fitness in violin playing, Chan is also an avid ceramicist and rock climber.
